Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration

What is the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art & Illustration?

The School is a unique community-based art program that offers students the opportunity to learn the art of botanical illustration through knowledge of plant structure, fine draftsmanship, and art concepts relating to the genre. A certificate in Botanical Art & Illustration is available.

Why a school of botanical illustration at Brookside Gardens?

The opening of the School creates a new facet in our mission as a public garden to "encourage an appreciation for the art of gardening and science of horticulture." Likewise, the discipline of botanical illustration combines two complimentary talents: the skill of scientific observation and botanical knowledge plus the artistic ability to capture on paper the essence of the living plant with both realism and beauty.

Who runs the School?

The School Director is Margaret Saul, an internationally recognized botanical artist and teacher who developed the original curriculum used to teach students the necessary skills to become a botanical artist. Margaret establishes the yearly course schedule, hires regular and visiting instructors, evaluates student work, teaches, and oversees daily work of the school. The School Manager, Ellen Bennett, coordinates adult education programs at Brookside Gardens. Ellen acts as liaison between the School and the Commission, facilitating student registration, instructor contracts, publicity and other tasks.

Where is the School located?

The School is located McCrillis Gardens, 6910 Greentree Road, Bethesda, Maryland. Classes are taught in two classrooms on the first floor of McCrillis House, a small colonial-revival structure that is also used as offices by McCrillis Gardens' staff and by the Montgomery Parks Foundation. McCrillis is a five-acre shade garden owned by M-NCPPC and managed by Brookside Gardens.

When does registration open for Fall/Winter 2007-2008 and Spring/Summer 2008 classes?

Registration opens for fall/winter classes on August 6, 2007. Registration will open for spring/summer classes on February 15, 2008.

Who can take classes?

All interested individuals are welcome to register for classes. Classes are offered at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, providing opportunities for all who are interested in this art form.
